"Everything begins with a desire." Nelly Sachs

Conversion over Conversion

Hello my friends,

It has already been seven days and some hours since I landed in Munich and I can still not believe that I am back.

But lets briefly look back to my last days in India. Sunday night they made a little goodbye-party for me. We played some games, made pictures, painted and that actually already was it. Mainly we just enjoyed the last time we had together, before I had to leave. The children gave me lots of little letters and pictures, so that I wouldn’t forget them. Additionally they made a big poster for me, on which everybody could write some nice words for me. Leaving wasn’t easy for me. With a sad heart we left to the airport.

The view from the airplane

At the airport in Guwahati the first challenge was already waiting for me. When I wanted to check-in, the lady at the counter told me that my ticket is invalid. Quite shocked I first had to think what to do. Fortunately I still had enough time to buy a new ticket. After I landed an hour earlier in Kolkata and squandered away some time, the next surprise was already waiting for me. I came to my gate and there they told me that I have to wait one more hour, because they are not sure, if my flight might be cancelled. Praise the Lord the flight wasn’t cancelled and so I could fly from Mumbai to Amsterdam. There I had a lot of stress when changing airplanes. In Amsterdam I really realized for the first moment that India was well and truly over.

Arrived in Munich my boyfriend surprised me, by picking me up at the airport. After that we went to subway and then back home.

The remaining days I actually just relaxed and visited some friends. It was wonderful to meet everybody again.

The difference to India:

  1. Fasten seat belts. Again and again I forget to put on my seatbelt, when I enter a car. Well, in India the police does not care about that.
  2. Traffic. I am surprised how “silent” the cities here are. It is weird, because before I went to India I thought that Graz is pretty loud – but now it is very pleasant and from my view not a lot of traffic on the streets.
  3. Weather. If you are used to 30 degrees and all of the sudden it only has 20 degrees, it is a little temperature difference. But the funniest thing is when you are the only one using a jacket and all the others already wear hoodies or even t-shirts.
  4. Language. Some of my friends have already realized, that I sometimes use English words instead of German ones. Very often I also don’t know how to express myself in German. Well, it is not as easy, if you have only spoken English for the last month.
  1. Water. In India I was used to not having a lot of water and to use it sparingly. That’s why it is very unusual to have all of the sudden a lot of water. The best about it are the showers – wonderfully warm and enough water, that even comes out of a showerhead. As you know I just had bucket showers in India, and so you get cold pretty fast.

But now I have to study, study and study – because I have my entrance exams for ergotherapy this week. So you will hear from me next week when I am travelling to Sweden.

See you,
Ellis
