"Everything begins with a desire." Nelly Sachs

The begin of a long Journey

My dear friends

Today it is not Ellis writing, but Hanna! Ellis started her studies as an occupational therapist and that’s why she wont be traveling that much anymore. Therefore she asked me to keep this going by telling about my traveling!

Since I was asked to be a teacher at a school in Honduras, my trip to Honduras started early on Monday morning! The plans were that my first flight would go from Munich to Paris, then from Paris to Atlanta and last from Atlanta to Tegucigalpa (the main town of Honduras). But as most of you probably know, there was a big hurricane “Irma” moving from Florida towards Atlanta, so till the morning I wasn’t sure if I could actually take my flight. On the internet you could still read the day before that it was possible and so I went to sleep Sunday night. When the alarm rang at 5 o’clock Monday morning the first thing I did was to check my phone if my flight was still okay. I opened my phone and there was a new text message in which I could read: “We are very sorry, but your flight from Paris to Atlanta has been cancelled. We are trying to find a solution and we will inform you as soon as possible.”

There I was: still laying in my bed, thinking: What should I do now? I had two possibilities: Either I could change my flight for no cost, but then I would have needed to cancel the hotel I was supposed to sleep in Atlanta and I didn’t know how soon it would be possible to fly to Honduras then, because I didn’t know how the weather would be like.

Or I could drive to the airport and see what they would tell me, but then I had to leave at 5:30 so I would be able to – if needed – catch the flight to Paris. The disadvantage, I could be stuck in Paris then.

I decided to call the service hotline – and wonderfully they are “open” earliest at 8 o’clock – soooo that was a very helpful service hotline 😀

So I just had to take a decision either to drive to the airport or to stay at home and change the flight! By considering all the circumstances I decided to drive to the airport and to pray that they would find a solution.

At the airport I was talking to the Customer Service of the air company I was supposed to fly with. He looked at all the different flying options and told me: “For today all the flights to Atlanta from Amsterdam and Paris are cancelled. I will give you a hotel room here in Munich and then you have to fly tomorrow.”

Since I didn’t have a big choice I decided to do that and so he tried to find a flight for the next day. While he was looking, he all of the sudden said: “I found a flight – and it is going today in 2 hours directly to Atlanta.” Being a bit unsure about the fact if it was safe to take that flight, he told me: “If they say that they will do the flight, it will be ok.”

So I got instead of a flight with a stop in Paris, a direct flight to Atlanta, which was even landing earlier than the other cancelled flight. Additionally, because I flew with another airline, my second additional luggage, which was supposed to cost 100€, just cost me 85€.

In the airplane I had a window seat with a free space next to me, so I had a very comfortable flight, with a lot of space and with actually very good food. All the people were very kind to me and helped me with everything. Also both of my big suitcases were actually to heavy and she still checked them in.

Comfortable in the airplane

So I was very happy about how they were able to manage all of this. But it didn’t really turn out the way I expected it.

One hour away from Atlanta

Approximately one hour away from Atlanta all of the sudden there was a message coming through the loudspeakers. The captain told us that due to the weather situation in Atlanta the airplane couldn’t land there.

I wasn’t very surprised about that message, since I knew that every other flight to Atlanta was cancelled, I was actually more surprised that my airplane started to fly there. So I knew, this is the beginning of my adventure.

Tomorrow I will tell you how everything ended up to be and how God still blessed it.

Thank you for all your prayers.

PS: I did land in Tegucigalpa – even though nothing went the planned way
