Hello my dear friends,
It has basically been forever since I sent out my last blog post and very, very much has happened in that time. As you can guess, since I came home from my vacation, I have been very busy. But I haven’t even shared anything about my vacation in San Andres yet, so in this blog post I will share with you about hopefully everything that we did on our vacation.
Just so you have a little bit of an idea how the island looks like …
- it is very small; by car you can drive around the whole island in about 40 minutes
- it is very pretty; the water is known for having many different colours
- it is very touristic; people from all around South America come to the island
- it is three main languages spoken on the island: Spanish, English and Creole.
- It is just….. you know what, let me just tell you what we were doing and get your own impression of the island by watching the pictures
Laguna – Big Pond: The first place we went is a lake, with some alligators living in there. We had the possibility to feed them and by that observe them from close.
Catholic Church: Very close to where we were staying was a huge and luxurious made Catholic Church. It was very interesting to get to experience one of the church services.
The beach: As you can expect, we spent some really nice time at different beaches. All of them are really pretty and the colours of the water just fascinating.
Sightseeing–Tour around the Island: With a Tourist Bus we took a tour around the whole island –experiencing the island culture as well as seeing some very pretty places.
- Columbus Museum
- Captain Morgan Museum
- Morgan Cave
- Hoyo Soplador: This is a whole in the ground where at times water and air comes out.
Baptist Church: The Baptist Church is the oldest church on the island and located as the highest point. It is worth going into there; by crawling up some steep ladders you end up on the roof of the church and get a beautiful few over the whole island.
Rocky Cay: is a little island that you can walk to from the beach. There is some type of path under water, which leads to the island. By walking on there, the water doesn’t come up higher than your chest.
Basketball Game: One evening we went, with the lady that we were staying with, to a local basketball game.
La Piscina: Translated called: The Pool! It is part of the sea, filled with very clear water and lots of fishes, naturally living there.
Besides only doing sightseeing, we also had the possibility to some Mission Work. An Adventist lady is starting a health ministry on the island. She opened up a little restaurant, as well as a small health centre and the foundation of that is the gardening – growing your own food for the health guests and the restaurant. Sounds great, right? So we had the possibility to help them one day, cleaning and setting up the place for the restaurant. There we had the opportunity to get to know three young missionaries from Colombia, which were staying there for some months, to help build up the place.
The last day we spent at two very beautiful places. By boat they offer a tour of first going to Johnny Cay Island and afterwards to Aquarium. At Johnny Cay we could take a swim in the clear water and spend some time watching the Iguanas. At Aquarium we spent most of the time in the water, experiencing different sea animals: Rays, Starfishes, Sea Urchins and in the end we even got to touch a shark 😀
Since part of Bonny’s Family comes from the island we had the opportunity to get to know her uncle, aunt and some of her cousins.
Three weeks on the island went way to fast and we could have spent way more time laying at the beach, swimming in the clear water and eating some yummy food. But the new school year didn’t allow us to stay any longer on the island. The last day we got said good bye with a Traditional Coconut Pineapple Cake.
On our travel back home God protected us through quite some strong turbulences and made us safely arrive back in VIDA to start into the new school year.
Thanks for all your prayers! God is good!
God bless you, and hopefully hear you soon again!
Yours Hanna
